Metabolically healthy transition and its association with body size change patterns among different adult age groups

•Metabolically healthy status is a transient state especially for late and middle adulthood.•Body size (body mass index/waist circumference) value changes are associated with metabolic deterioration.•The natural trajectory of fluctuation to obese phenotype has the closer relationship with metabolic deterioration than maintaining the stable obese phenotype.
