Dehydration of levoglucosan to levoglucosenone over solid acid catalysts. Tuning the product distribution by changing the acid properties of the catalysts

•The product distribution obtained from the LGA conversion can be tuned depending on the type of catalyst.•Lewis acid sites were inactive to LGA conversion.•Catalysts containing only Brønsted acid sites produced mainly levulinic acid.•Internal diffusion limitation of LGA in the zeolites pores was responsible for low activity of these materials.
