•D−A−D structured 2,3−dicyanopyrazino phenanthrene amines are synthesized.•ICT and emission characteristics in dyes varied with modulation in donor amines.•Excellent solvatofluorochromism and “Blue–green” emission aids by ICT.•Formation of emissive nanoparticles in THF/H2O media induces AIE properties in some dyes.•Electrochemical properties shows ambipolar nature of dyes.
