The use of black mass in spent primary battery as an oxidative catalyst for removal of volatile organic compounds

•A spent primary battery was recycled as an environmental catalyst.•Environmental catalysts were prepared from black mass of different types of spent primary batteries.•The prepared black mass catalysts were applied to VOCs oxidation.•Manganese-rich black mass catalyst had excellent catalytic activity.
