The road ahead for applications of mechanics in drug delivery

•We discuss opportunities for integration of mechanics and drug delivery for improved patient treatment.•We point out current challenges in drug delivery which can heavily benefit from principles of mechanics to develop next-generation of biomedical devices.•We cover a broad range of subfields within mechanics including both computational and experimental approaches.
