•Se-MPS showed protect L-02 cells against K2Cr2O7-induced injury and cytotoxicity.•Se-MPS inhibited K2Cr2O7-induced toxicity via maintaining the stability of MMP.•Se-MPS serves as a natural active substance for attenuating Cr (VI) poisoning.
