Anatomy of Pinus mugo var. mugo as a fundament for annual-ring-based dating of debris flows in the alpine zone

•The anatomical responses of P. mugo to debris flow injury were investigated.•The most intense reaction was changes in tracheid morphometry.•The accompanying reaction was a multiplication of radial rays.•Detected anatomical responses can be used to date debris flows.
