•Manganese removal was enhanced due to the biocake layer formation.•Effects of pre-treatments on the filtration performance of GDM were evaluated.•GAC filter could efficiently enhance the removal of organic pollutants.•Optimized mixing ratio in the GAC permeate and secondary effluent was 7:3.•GAC/GDM process showed cost advantages in the small and medium-scale water reuse scenarios.
