•The existence form and distribution of iron in spent SCR catalyst was studied.•97.1% of iron was removed from spent SCR catalyst.•The synergistic effect of H2SO4 and ascorbic acid promotes iron dissolving.•The mechanism of iron removal from spent SCR catalyst was studied.
