Cyperaceae species used for the treatment of inflammation: A review of ethnomedicinal, pharmacological, toxicological, and phytochemical evidence

•Ten species of Cyperaceae are indicated in traditional medicine for the treatment of inflammation.•In vivo and in vitro anti-inflammatory activity has been reported for 13 species of Cyperaceae.•Fifty compounds isolated from Cyperaceae species showed anti-inflammatory potential.•The essential oil, extracts and fractions obtained from Cyperaceae did not show relevant toxicity.
