•The inhibiting effect of TPPI with different concentrations on COLT was studied.•The inhibiting effect of TPPI is realized by polymerizing with ROO· and RO· radicals and reducing the R· radicals.•The inhibition mechanism of TPPI was discussed by quantum chemical theory.
