•It is more objective to evaluate the MuV neurovirulence by vibratory sectioning.•It is more reasonable to use 1-day-old rat to evaluate the neurovirulence of MuV.•100 CCID50 of MuV could cause significant cell damage in neonatal rat brain.•This model for evaluating MuV neurovirulence is highly efficient and objective.
