Individual differences and predictors of general awareness in problem gambling

•Gambling harms strongly predict awareness, both cross-sectionally and over time.•Awareness is associated with gambling context, involvement, and impaired control.•Low awareness is associated with higher rates of remission.•High awareness is associated with attempts to control or cut down gambling.
