•A novel aminocoumarin (6-hydroxy-7-amino-4-methylcoumarin) with synthesis details.•Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence in three solvents.•The fluorescence quantum yield is higher than the commercial laser dye, coumarin 120.•DFT/TD-DFT modeling to support the experimental results.•Comparison to Coumarin 120, DAMC and aesculetin.
