•This article showed the effect and safety of clinical studies on acupuncture treats ONP.•Acupuncture can obviously relieve patients’ symptoms, which is easy to operate and apply.•The results provide effective evidence for the clinical application of acupuncture for the treatment of ONP.•This article discussed the current shortcoming in most clinical research and provided suggestions for further study.
