Real-time terahertz imaging system with a HCN laser

Terahertz (THz) radiation is set to play a key role in a wide range of imaging applications, from security check to medical diagnosis. We demonstrate a real-time terahertz imaging system based on a continuous wave (CW) discharge-pumped hydrogen cyanide (HCN) laser operating at 0.89 THz (337 mu m) with power up to tens of milliwatts. In this work we present the acquisition of a THz-video (32 x 32 pixels at 20 frames-persecond), shown in real-time, using a THz detector operating at room temperature. The results of the experiments reveal that this THz imaging system has the potential to be used for real-time mail inspection and non-destructive inspection.
