•Characteristics of different flow patterns in plant are explained in detail.•Dimensionless parameters that affect the roughness of the horizontal interface are given.•Circulation cells can only exist in plant with "One-way” pattern under no or negative buoyancy.•Theoretical condition of the existence of circulation cells in the plant is deduced.
