•Germline BRCA mutation carriers are more likely to undergo secondary cytoreduction surgery.•Longer time to recurrence, non-lymphatic recurrence and no ascites at recurrence were significant predictors of secondary cytoreduction.•Oligometastatic disease was the only independent predictor of secondary cytoreduction.
