•NLC functionalized with chitosan had not yet been investigated in PTD.•Chitosan coating resulted in greater encapsulation efficiency and greater stability.•Coated NLC was biocompatible and promoted faster drug entry into the skin.•The photodynamic efficiency of coated NLC was unexpectedly lower than uncoated NLC.
