•National picture of impacts of temperature on influenza was explored in China.•An N-shape relationship between temperature and influenza incidence was discovered.•Nationwide, AF was 60.0% during the days with sensitive temperatures (1.6°C–14.4 °C).•Ranges of sensitive temperatures varied for different populations and regions.•Juveniles, children and people living in South China were more vulnerable.
