Synthesis of a dual-emissive pyrene-based fluorescent probe for imaging intracellular viscosity

•Fluorescence color changes from blue to green was induced by viscosity using a pyrene-based molecular probe.•A microscopic change in cellular viscosity was clearly observed inside and outside the mitochondria of living cells.•The fluorescent probe could estimate the viscosity of various solutions as well as inside living cells.
