•A novel S-scheme SnO2/SnS2 heterojunction was fabricated by in-situ method.•The SnO2/SnS2 composite showed higher Cr(VI) and MO photocatalytic degradation.•The photocatalytic mechanism was investigated by first-principles calculations.•S-scheme heterojunction accelerated separation of photoelectron-hole pairs.
