•Li6AlGd(BO3)4: Dy3+ phosphors have been crystallized with average size of 43-53 nm•HR-SEM micrograph reveals leaf-like morphology with agglomeration of particles•Dy3+ ions occupy lower symmetry sites with non-inversion centers of Li6AlGd(BO3)4•Li6AlGd(BO3)4: 1.0 Dy3+ phosphor has highest proficiency for lighting applications
