•Hf/Co/Hf trilayer samples were investigated as function of Co film thickness.•Trilayer films exhibit a magnetic coercivity around 6 nm film thickness.•Total thickness of interfacial magnetic dead layer of Co is below 1 nm.•Asymmetric behaviour was observed for two interfaces of Co.
