Molecular basis of pharmacogenetics . The human genome presents sequence variations that can modify the efficacy of a drug treatment or the risk of adverse effects associated with its use. They concern in particular the genes coding for drug metabolism enzymes. Two approaches are used to evaluate the metabolic capacity of an individual with respect to a given enzyme: phenotyping and genotyping. The latter requires the prior collection of a biological sample from which the individual's genomic deoxyribonucleic acid is extracted, purified and analyzed.
