•The Rogaland Anorthosite complex took about 100 Myr to form.•Anorthosite emplacement involved different processes in an evolving stress regime.•The distribution of UHT rocks reflects differential tectonic exhumation.•At no point during orogeny did the crust in the study area thicken significantly.•Long-lived extension was interrupted by intermittent compression.
