Rapid screening of up-conversion luminescence phosphors with host containing Yb3+ by 980 nm laser radiation

Rapid screening of up-conversion luminescence (UCL) phosphors with host containing Yb3+ by 980 nm laser radiation was demonstrated, and Yb1.9W3O12:0.1Er3+ and Yb2.9Al5O12:0.1Er3+ phosphors had been successfully prepared by 208.44 W/cm2 of 980 nm laser radiation for 2 s, which is originated from Yb3+ with large absorption cross section around 980 nm. Yb1.9W3O12:0.1Er3+ and Yb2.9Al5O12:0.1Er3+ phosphors emit green and red UCL with the naked eye, respectively. This method can also quickly screen out Er3+ quenching concentration value. And the results of this method are proved to be accurate, which are consistent with that of solid state sintered pure phase samples. The method can be widely applied to prepare and screen other materials by using the light absorption of certain element in the host and choosing laser wavelength as the same with light absorption.
