摘要

•Saponin-assisted foaming for preparing alginate-clay composite (CRAB) adsorbent.•The CRAB exhibits a macro-mesoporous structure resembling a sponge.•99.5 % Cu2+ and 99.7 % Cr6+ removals were achieved within 30 and 40 min by CRAB.•CRAB can reduce Cu2+ and Cr6+ in contaminated water to drinkable limit.•Waste regeneration solution containing Cu2+ can reduce 4-nitrophenol.
