Spatial mode-based calibration (SMoC) of forecast precipitation fields from numerical weather prediction models

•A spatial mode-based calibration model is developed to post-process short-term forecasts of precipitation fields.•The calibration model directly embeds spatial structure into calibrated ensemble forecasts.•Calibrated ensemble forecasts are shown to be of high quality at both grid-cell and basin scales.
