•MOFs-derived Fe, N-co doped porous carbon anchored on activated carbon was successfully prepared and characterized as an efficient electrode material for the electrosorption of phosphorus over a wide operating pH range (4.0–10.0).•The high specific area and the more active surface groups induced by Fe, N -codoping accounted for the enhanced electrosorption activity.•An electric field, electrostatic attraction, and ligand exchange controlled the phosphorus electrosorption process.
