•Axisymmetrically loaded layer-substrate system is solved analytically in polar coordinates using Hankel transform.•The discretization using annular ring is advantageous over rectangular mesh for axisymmetric contact analyses.•The CGM-based iterative scheme shows a superlinear rate of convergence for solving axisymmetric contact problems.
