•The COVID-19 pandemic progressed in the form of waves over time.•Waves can be represented by a pattern string of “rise”, “fall”, and “steady” denoting the trend of daily new cases.•US counties experienced variations in their pandemic wave patterns.•These variations are analyzed by grouping counties into four classes using Latent Class Analysis.
