•Depressive and obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms frequently co-occur.•Network analysis was used to examine symptom covariation.•Symptom-level associations were observed OC and depressive symptoms.•Obsessions, negative affect, and cognitive-somatic changes were central.•Repugnant thoughts were most closely associated with depressive symptoms.
