•A more general uncertainty reasoning model is proposed to help solve crimes.•The knowledge for crime reconstruction is represented by Bayesian networks.•A growth algorithm of Bayesian networks is proposed to adapt to different cases.•The model can provide useful investigation suggestions and reconstruct crimes.
