•Age at menarche relates to depression severity and depression risk.•Depression is 61 % more likely in the lower normative range of pubertal development.•Androstenedione is increased in girls with clinically significant depressive symptoms.•Neither gonadal nor adrenal hormones relate to adolescent depression severity.
