•Transcriptome analysis revealed the relationship between PM2.5 exposure and autophagy.•PM2.5 exposure led to lung pathological changes in mouse model via autophagy.•IL24 was identified as a potential target associated with PM2.5-induced autophagy.•L24 was regulated by inhibition of mTOR.
