•Air side performance of wavy FTHXs with large waffle heights is studied.•Increasing waffle height can realize better j/f 1/3 factors.•Decreases in fin pitch and wave length tend to enhance the thermal/frictional performance.•Test of six correlations shows accurate estimates of heat transfer and pressure drop by Wang et al.’s model.
