Eliciting preferences for income redistribution: A new survey item

•We introduce a new survey item to measure preferences for income redistribution.•It forces respondents to consider trade-offs involved with distribution.•It keeps tax revenues constant and takes into account efficiency costs of taxation.•It measures preferred equality in different regions of the income distribution.•Results show that the new data predict subsequent behavior.
