•Polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) adversely affect sewage sludge composting.•PS-MPs reduced the key enzyme (alkaline phosphatase, β-glucosidase) activities.•The relative abundance of bacteria and their correlations with key enzymes changed.•PS-MPs affect composting through reduced MBC and temperature.
