Qualitative content analysis of public responses to an FDA inquiry on the impact of scheduling changes to kratom

•Kratom is a tree whose leaves produce mild stimulant and opioid-like effects.•In summer 2021, the US FDA solicited public comment regarding kratom use and regulation.•Over 6000 respondents reported using kratom to treat over 106 health conditions.•The majority of responses were related to pain, substance use disorders, and mental illness.•Understanding the reasons that kratom is used can aid regulatory decision-making with respect to its abuse liability and therapeutic potential.
