•Fe-substitution induces structural transition from tetragonal to cubic phase.•Magnetic ordering temperature (TN) also increases from 43 K to above 400 K.•XAS study have revealed the Jahn-Teller splitting reduced due to Fe-substitution.•The increased magnetic moment between Td- and Oh-site cations enhances the TN.
