Bulk synchronous reluctance rotor: A novel design concept in electric motors

•A novel concept for constructing synchronous reluctance rotors is proposed.•The phase transformation from amorphous to crystalline of magnetic alloys might enable the in-situ installation of permanent magnets in rotors.•Rare-earth-based alloys are identified as initial candidates.•Advantages and challenges of such concept are identified and discussed.
