The role of zinc in dermatological practice

Topical application of mac-roscale zinc oxide is due to its proven astrin-gent, antiseptic, and wound-healing effects. The use of nanoscale zinc oxide in many products is discussed: When used on intact skin, only small amounts of zinc ions are released, and they are harmless. Available studies on zinc oxide nanoparticles do not point to relevant acute toxicity; however, studies on injured skin are required.
