Decomposition and decoupling analysis of aluminum in-use stocks in China

•The total and sub-sector distribution of China's AIUS is quantified in1978–2018.•The driving forces of China's AIUS are analyzed from the supply and demand sides.•The consumption structure is the most vital factor inhibiting the growth of AIUS.•The decoupling indicator is used to analyze the relationship between AIUS and GDP.•An EKC-like pattern is observed between AIUS intensity and economic growth.
