•The Tengchong and Lincang granite belts in western Yunnan have large potential for iREE deposits exploration.•Monzogranite parent rocks with REE over 300 ppm are conducive to the formation of iREE deposits.•Region ductile-shear metamorphism and magmatic-hydrothermal alteration are favorable for iREE mineralization.
