An approach to functional longevity in Latxa dairy sheep

•The genetic and non-genetic factors influencing functional longevity in Latxa dairy sheep were investigated.•Delaying the onset of reproduction or having more than 1 lamb per parturition increased the risk of culling.•Producing more milk markedly decreased the risk of culling.•Longevity is a trait with low heritability.
