•One-class classification (OCC) was explored as a new approach for halal meat species certification.•Comparison of portable ATR-FTIR and DR-FTIR performance for meat speciation as non-destructive, cost-effective and rapid routine screening methods.•Prediction performance of linear and non-linear multivariate classification methods for meat speciation showed better scores for DR-FTIR.•Development of one-class classification methodology as an effective approach.
