•A curcumin loaded coating with flake structure prepared on AZ31 alloy.•Coating displays anticorrosion and antibacterial ability with low cytotoxicity.•High photothermal conversion efficiency and photothermal antibacterial coating on AZ31 alloy surface.•A new double antibacterial coating preparation method for the Mg bone implants is provided.•β-CD and SA used to enhance bioavailability of curcumin and binding force.
