•A simplified two-city spatial equilibrium model is proposed.•The impacts of intercity commuting on multi-mode multi-city system are explored.•Intercity commuting improve utility and make cities compact under fixed incomes.•City boundaries may expand then shrink as train improved under endogenous incomes.
