Severe cyanobacterial blooms in an Australian lake; causes and factors controlling succession patterns

•Chrysosporum ovalisporum blooms were caused by thermal stratification and low N availability.•C. ovalisporum may supplement the nutrient budget of the lake with atmospherically derived N.•Fixed N may promote non-diazotrophic blooms later in the summer.
